U.S. Department of Education U.S. Department of Education Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo, will join author and President Obama's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, along with celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Chief Executive Officer Robert Velasco II and veteran pro-football player Chris Draft on Wednesday, July 20 at noon for this summer's third Let's Read! Let's Move! summer enrichment event on the outdoor plaza of the Department's Lyndon Baines Johnson headquarters building in Washington, D.C. U.S. Department of Education Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo, will join author and President Obama's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, along with celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Chief Executive Officer Robert Velasco II and veteran pro-football player Chris Draft on Wednesday, July 20 at noon for this summer's third Let's Read! Let's Move! summer enrichment event on the outdoor plaza of the Department's Lyndon Baines Johnson headquarters building in Washington, D.C. The Department's Let's Read! Let's Move! series aims to increase awareness of the critical importance of summer learning and encourage all adults to read to children. Children and staff from Georgetown Hill HHS/ED Children's Center, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Youth Center, Horizons Greater Washington at St.Patrick's Episcopal Day School, Horizons Greater Washington at Maret, Triangle Tots, HHS/ED Children's Center and the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation will participate in the event. Waldo, Soetoro-Ng, Mendelsohn and Velasco will read a children's book to students. Draft, a guest of the YMCA, will join the children in playing games and participating in fitness activities, as part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative to emphasize the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle. The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington PHD (Physical, Healthy, Driven) program will contribute staff and resources to conduct games, Target Corporation will provide books and healthy snacks and Nickelodeon will provide cookbooks and pedometers to support this summer's series of events. As part of the Let's Read! Let's Move! series, the Department has invited Cabinet members, administration officials and other public figures to join in reading children's books, promoting healthy lifestyles and participating in games and fitness activities with children in pre-kindergarten through third grade, from various local schools and summer programs. The final Let's Read! Let's Move! event is scheduled for July 26.
